Danielsaurus

Hi there. It’s nice to meet you.

Danielsaurus is a website about children, their play, society, technology, and other stuff – basically anything that’s on the mind of me, independent writer and very occasional thinker Daniel Bigler.

Currently I live and teach in the Pacific Northwest – and despite years of wishing it were so, I am also not a dinosaur. I started this blog a couple of years ago after finding too much awesome stuff that I wanted to keep track of. Since I found it interesting, I figured others might too – so Danielsaurus was born.

And just because you were wondering, this is what I look like:

The Kids Are Alright

Over the years I’ve managed to accumulate a few of those fancy-schmanzy college degrees that people talk about – all mainly in the same thing, Children’s & Childhood Studies (plus an oddball one that I’m working on now from Switzerland in Children’s Rights).

Yes, I think kids are something special, and yes, I think they actively approach and interpret the world in their own unique ways. I chum around with Rousseau more than Locke, I read William Corsaro and study children’s cultures for fun, and I don’t like people who complain about “kids these days.” They’re all right, kids these days – so lighten up and go get to know one if you think they really do ruin your lawn that much.

Currently my day job is teaching Children’s Studies classes to a bunch of awesome college kids. It’s pretty great. I’m also involved with a fantastic new advocacy organization called Pop-Up Adventure Play – dedicated to helping put children’s play at the center of communities. If you happen to be in NYC this summer, come and visit us!

As far as what’s next? Well, I don’t know. If you have suggestions, I’m open to them. Anyway, that’s about all I have to say about me.

This Site

Powered by magical lollipops and a healthy dash of octopus saliva, Danielsaurus.com is my corner of the web to think out loud. I like thinking about things; I like processing, exploring, discovering. This has become the place where I do all of that. I can’t promise it’ll always be tidy, but I hope it’ll be worthwhile – and I would certainly love for you to join me.

Hearty thanks go to Brendan Stromberger for helping me design and code the site. He’s an awesome guy; if you’re in the market for a graphic & web designer, you should hire him.
